One Of A Kind Item.
Once the pride of archaeological collectors, Roman glass has transformed into exotic pieces of fine jewelry. Each piece is distinctively set in gold or silver, specially designed to complement the look and feel of the ancient glass. In the past, such rare items were only found in museums or in private collections.
Now, they can belong to people everywhere. In the ancient world, before the advent of modern factories, each piece of glassware was hand-made by a skilled craftsman, each piece like a small work of art. This is not plastic or modern mass-produced glass. These artifacts were created centuries ago, and yet they seem like timeless patterns designed by a post-impressionist artist. The rich ancient hues have been transformed and softened by the passage of time and by the minerals of the earth, creating a gentle pattern of exotic colors… dark blues fading into magenta … Poetry in a glass!
History
All began in the deserts of the ancient world, the crossroads of civilization. More than 2000 years ago the Roman Empire conquered most of the known world and began manufacturing glass using the desert sands. Owing to its availability and a wide variety of forms and uses, glass soon became the “craze” of the ancient world, rivaling clay pottery for personal use and artistic appeal. It was most commonly used for personal items such as women’s cosmetic or perfume bottles, flasks for lotions and oils, or for items found around the house such as vases and tableware.
The young woman in Jerusalem dipping perfume from a finely crafted bottle would never have imagined that 2000 years later, another young woman would be wearing a fragment of this very bottle, continuing the legacy of the ancient glass-makers of the Roman Empire!
Source
Roman glass is unearthed in archaeological excavations in the lands along the ancient trade routes in what is now Israel, Afghanistan, and Syria. Its fine patterns remain intact, its colors enriched by the absorption of minerals from the earth throughout the centuries.
